At Mercedes-Benz of Sugar Land, we celebrated Oktoberfest a little differently this year by taking guests back to where it all began. In honor of 140 years of Mercedes-Benz innovation, our Oktoberfest celebration featured a rare opportunity to experience the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, widely recognized as the world’s first practical automobile, in motion.

Invented by Carl Benz in 1886, the Patent-Motorwagen changed the course of transportation forever. Just two years later, his wife, Bertha Benz, demonstrated its potential when she completed the first long-distance automobile journey, proving that the invention was ready for the open road. Today, this historic vehicle remains an important part of the Mercedes-Benz legacy.

Our showroom is home to one of only 100 replicas of the original Patent-Motorwagen, typically displayed as a permanent piece of automotive history. For Oktoberfest, we brought the replica to life, giving guests the unique opportunity to take a ride in a vehicle that represents the very beginning of the automobile. Rather than simply sharing the story of our brand’s origins, we wanted our community to experience that history firsthand.

“We wanted to do more than tell the story of where the automobile began—we wanted our guests to experience it,” shared Ken Enders, President and Owner of Mercedes-Benz of Sugar Land. “Seeing this remarkable machine running and giving rides made history tangible. It was a special way for our community to celebrate the heritage behind the Mercedes-Benz name while looking toward the future.”

The Patent-Motorwagen was just the beginning of the automotive journey showcased throughout the event. As Mercedes-Benz celebrates 140 years of innovation, guests had the opportunity to explore a special lineup of vehicles highlighting more than a century of engineering and design. The display traced the evolution of the automobile, from the historic Motorwagen to modern performance engineering, culminating in the ultra-exclusive Mercedes-AMG® GT Black Series Project One Edition.

Guests enjoyed German food, beer and wine tastings from Texas Biergarten, while racing enthusiasts tested their skills with virtual racing from Velocity Sim Racing Lounge on Germany’s famous Nürburgring. Families also joined in the fun with face painting, coloring, a pumpkin patch, and stein-holding competitions.

The celebration continued with special giveaways and commemorative gifts. The first 50 guests received complimentary Oktoberfest T-shirts and steins, and attendees had the chance to win prizes including a family package to the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center, a couples’ night at Smart Financial Centre and a Formula 1-themed racing package.

For us, Oktoberfest was an opportunity to bring our community together, honor the history that shaped our brand, and reflect on how far automotive innovation has come. From the Patent-Motorwagen to today’s most advanced performance vehicles, the event offered a glimpse into more than 140 years of engineering milestones while celebrating the future of driving.

As a privately owned dealership proud to serve Sugar Land and the greater Houston community, we remain committed to creating experiences that connect our guests with the Mercedes-Benz legacy in meaningful ways. We look forward to continuing that tradition through the vehicles, events, and community partnerships that make Mercedes-Benz of Sugar Land unique.
